According to research published in Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society, 3I/ATLAS - an object found only three known objects from beyond the solar system ever spotted - formed in extremely cold conditions, far from any star. The comet was observed using a new instrument developed by the Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC), installed on the Isaac Newton Group's 4.2-meter William Herschel Telescope.
By combining the use of an imaging spectroscopy technique called Large Integral Field Unit (LIFU) with non-sidereal guiding capabilities, researchers were able to identify five different ions in the comet's stream simultaneously. This suggests that 3I/ATLAS formed somewhere extremely cold, likely colder than -240°C (-400°F), and may have originated from a distant region of another planetary system.
This discovery is significant because it provides scientists with a rare opportunity to study material that has formed around other stars. By analyzing the ions present in the comet's stream, researchers can gain insights into how planets and comets form and evolve.
